I was reading the local paper, #The Pilot and Today, which, in my opinion is the best free local paper in the US. Anyway one of the writers for the Pilot, asked the question "How long do you have to live in Steamboat to become a local?" The general consensus he recounted was the 5 year rule.
Having lived here now going on 9 years I had to ask myself "When did I become a local?" It really kind of sneaks up on you. I think being a "local" means you have lived through calving season, (really mud season) at least once, you have tubed down the Yampa when it was so low you had to push off the rocks before hitting hard on the bottom and you have to have participated in at least one opening day at the ski mountain for the Winter Sports Club and "Ski for Deso" day, and actually know who Deso was.
There are so many things that are unique and quirky about being a local in Steamboat like knowing when and where the two for one deals are at the best restaurants and when $1 PBR night is not to mention where the best camping sites are and the best places to trail ride.
I think for me, the first time I actually felt like a local was the first time I went to a Strings in the Mountains concert the first summer I lived here. I walked in to a gathering of over 200 people and time after time someone would come up to me and greet me by name and tell me how great it was that I could make it.
In that moment I realized that in the last 20 years of living back east I could not think of a single event where I felt so genuinely accepted.I had arrived.
When was the first time you realized you were a local?
