Mud Season or Calving Season

There is a long standing tradition here in Steamboat once the ski mountain closes, where the valley clears out and the town of Steamboat Springs takes a long cleansing breath before gearing up for the summer season of biking, hiking, camping, horsebackriding, tubing sailing (yes we have a lake) and all of the outdoor activities held so dear here in Steamboat.

But not everyone takes a break.  Steamboat and Routt County have a long tradition of ranching dating back to the 1800's, handed down through generations and remain a vibrant part of our heritage. What the local skiers call "mud season" is actually "calving season".  A time of rebirth and promise to ranchers throughout the valley. However, with the last two years of drought local ranchers pray that this late season snow helps fill the riverbeds and basins so hay will be once again plentiful in the valley.

Last year msny ranchers, used to producing their own hay, because of the drought were forced to pay as much as $400 a ton for cow hay.  If a rancher is carrying a permanant herd of cows the cost can have devastating economic impact forcing ranchers to considering selling off their herds,

We complain about the lousy weather during this time and the lack of things to do while it continues to snow in the valley but really we need to remember that the precipitation is life renewing and loosing even one of our ranches here in the valley has lasting impact on the culture and lifestyle we have all come to consider the Steamboat way of life.

So for those of us still here and counting the days until we see the emerald colored hills that take your breath away....say a prayer that today it will rain!
