A Steamboat Thanksgiving Story

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual…O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it, for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.”
― Henry David Thoreau

This Thanksgiving has been an interesting one for us, and probably for all of you as well. This past year has been a tumultuous one to say the least...The Boston Marathon Bombing, the US Government shutdown, the Oklahoma tornado and Detroit filing bankruptcy to name a few. But, Thanksgiving is about remembering and saying thanks for the people and events in our lives that have not only sustained us but have also created a better world for us to live in, like the curing of a 2 year old girl from the US born with HIV, the DOW Jones finally returning, and of course the new iPhone5 (haha).
Thanksgiving is not only about being thankful for what we have ourselves, but also for taking that thanks and projecting it onto people in our lives that are less fortunate. A perfect example of this is my daughter Alex, and her friend Pippa starting a GoFundMe campaign for their mutual childhood friend Jackie. A couple of weeks ago, Jackie fell off a roof and broke her back leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Jackie is currently trying to reenter society relearning how to do things such as brushing her teeth, writing and simply sitting up at the end of her bed. Hearing this, Alex and Pippa promptly decided it was time to take action and give back. Jackie's GoFundMe campaign will go to getting Jackie a top of the line wheelchair, among other new necessities she will need now.
The best part about this story is that Jackie has had nothing but a positive attitude since her accident. She is looking at this as a new opportunity to help and serve other people that are in her same circumstance. She has been an inspiration to all around her. Apparently, Alex and Pippa were not the only ones inspired by Jackie, because they have already raised $595.00 in 12 hours through donations to Jackie's cause! We share this Thanksgiving story with you because hearing it has touched our hearts and has truly made us remember that we have so much to be thankful for. We hope sharing this moves you and encourages you to forget all the daily minutiae and really embrace this special holiday.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
